Bihar Political Crisis News Live Updates: Nitish Kumar back in Mahagathbandhan; oath ceremony tomorrow at 2pm
Bihar Political Crisis Live Updates, Bihar Politics News: This is the second time that the Nitish-led JD(U) has snapped ties with BJP in eight years; state BJP president Sanjay Jaiswal accuses Nitish Kumar of betraying the people of Bihar.
As Nitish Kumar ended his alliance with the BJP, speculation is rife that he would seek another appointment from the Bihar governor. But not alone
Janata Dal (United) chairperson Nitish Kumar on Tuesday submitted his resignation to the Bihar Governor, Phagu Chauhan, after snapping ties with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), bringing an end to the coalition government in the state. According to the reports, Nitish Kumar arrived at the residence of Rabri Devi in Patna where Congress and Left party leaders and MLAs had met earlier today for a meeting. As Nitish Kumar ended his alliance with the BJP, speculation is rife that he would seek another appointment from the Bihar governor. But not alone.
According to the reports, Nitish Kumar will ask for a second appointment with Bihar Governor Phagu Chauhan. During the second appointment, Nitish Kumar will be accompanied by RJD’s Tejashwi Yadav
After resigning as the chief minister, Nitish Kumar met Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav and his mother, Rabri Devi, at the latter's residence. Nitish Kumar and Tejashwi Yadav were later seen leaving her residence together. Some RJD sources have said that during the meeting, Nitish Kumar told Tejashwi Yadav that they should “begin a new chapter".
“Let us forget what happened in 2017 and begin a new chapter," said JD (U) leader Nitish Kumar to RJD's Tejashwi Yadav, RJD sources have said.
This is in reference to July 2017 when Nitish Kumar pulled out of an alliance with the Lalu Prasad-led RJD and stitched an alliance with the BJP to form a new government in the state. Announcing his decision, Nitish Kumar had then quoted corruption and criminal cases against Tejashwi Yadav, who was the Bihar deputy chief minister in Nitish Kumar's tenure, and his father Lalu Prasad Yadav.
According to the reports, the duo – Nitish Kumar and Tejashwi Yadav – is now marching to the Governor's office, likely to stake claim to form a new JD(U)-RJD coalition government in the state.
Bihar Political Crisis Live News Updates: On a day of fast-moving political developments, Bihar’s mercurial leader Nitish Kumar, soon after resigning as the chief minister, met Governor Phagu Chauhan once again and staked claim to form a new government. Leader of the Opposition Tejashwi Yadav accompanied him. The JD(U)-RJD led ‘Mahagathbandhan’ (grand alliance) will take oath at 2 pm on Wednesday. Nitish has already been elected leader of the Mahagathbandhan of seven parties. The effective strength of the state Assembly is 242 and the magic figure is 122. Speaking to the media later, Kumar said he submitted a list of 164 MLAs to the governor who will decide when the oath-taking can take place.
Kumar’s move, which was a reversal of what happened in 2017 when he left the Mahagathbandhan to rejoin the NDA, left ally BJP out in the cold for the second time in eight years. Accusing Nitish Kumar of betraying the people of Bihar and the BJP, president of the saffron party’s state unit Sanjay Jaiswal Tuesday said: “We fought the 2020 polls together under NDA, the mandate was for JD-U and BJP, we won more seats despite that, Nitish Kumar was made the CM. Whatever happened today is a betrayal of Bihar’s people & the BJP.”
During a joint presser with Kumar, Tejashwi Yadav said: “Nitish is the most experienced Chief Minister in the country who has taken a courageous step.” Launching a scathing attack on the BJP, the RJD leader said: “Across the Hindi heartland, the BJP does not have any alliance partners. History tells us that the BJP destroys the parties with which it forms an alliance. We did see that happening in Punjab and Maharashtra.” “JP Nadda said they will end regional parties. The BJP knows only to intimidate and buy people. Our only aim was to not let the BJP implement its agenda in Bihar. We all know how Laluji stopped the ‘Rath’ of Advaniji. We won’t relent at any cost,” Tejashwi Yadav added.
